Bright, friendly workspace with plant and cup of tea — symbolising website growth and calm starts

Why Your Website Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect to Start (And What to Do Instead)

I see you. You’ve been tweaking that homepage for weeks (maybe even months), playing with different fonts, swapping colours, and rewriting that “About Me” section for the fifteenth time. You keep thinking, “I’ll launch once it feels just right… maybe after I change that photo again… or rewrite that headline…”

Here’s a gentle secret from me to you: your website doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. Chasing “perfect” might be the very thing holding you back from sharing your magic with the world.

Perfect is an illusion (and it’s keeping you stuck)

The truth is, there’s no such thing as a perfect website. Even the biggest brands you admire are constantly tweaking, updating, and refreshing their sites.

A website is a living, growing thing; it evolves as you (and your business or side hustle) evolve.

And remember: your website isn’t a print publication! It’s not a brochure you send to the printers once and can never touch again. You can update it at any time. You should, and Google loves it when you do.

When you keep your website fresh and updated, it signals to search engines (hello Google algorithm) that your business is active and alive. This can help you rank better and stay visible to the people who need you.

Embrace the MVP mindset (Minimum Viable Product)

There’s a concept from the startup world called an MVP, which stands for Minimum Viable Product.

The whole idea is this: instead of spending forever trying to make something “perfect” before showing it to anyone, you launch the simplest, most basic version that still works and solves a problem. Then, you learn, grow, and improve it over time, based on honest feedback and authentic experiences.

Your website can be an MVP too!

Rather than trying to build the dream site with every bell and whistle from day one, focus on creating a simple, clear foundation:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • How can people work with you or reach you

Once you put it out into the world, you’ll learn so much more than if you kept tweaking behind the scenes. You’ll see what questions people ask, which pages they visit most, and what resonates with you. Then you can improve and grow it step by step.

Build in phases to avoid overwhelm.

One of my favourite ways to help clients launch confidently is to work in phases.

Phase 1 is your MVP, the essential pieces to get you live and connecting with people as quickly (and calmly) as possible.

After that, we can move on to Phase 2, Phase 3, and beyond, adding things like:

  • A blog or resource library
  • Extra services pages
  • Testimonials or case study sections
  • Fancy animations or extra branding touches

This approach keeps things simple and stops you from feeling overwhelmed. It also helps keep your budget manageable because you’re not trying to do everything at once.

You can now start sharing your story, then grow and evolve your website as your business blossoms, and as you feel ready.

What to do instead: Start soft, start small

Instead of trying to build a massive, “finished” website, start with something small and doable.

  • Choose one page to focus on (usually your homepage).
  • Pick one call to action, for example: “Book a call,” “Join my email list,” or “Send me a message.”
  • Use placeholder images or simple photos; you can always swap them later.
  • Set a little “go live” deadline for yourself (and stick to it!).

Starting is so much better than waiting for everything to be perfect. Once your site is live, you can continue to improve it as you learn and grow.

Your website is a journey, not a one-time project.

Think of your website like a lovely plant in your home. You water it, you move it into the sun, you prune it now and then.

You don’t expect it to look like a perfect Instagram post straight away; it grows over time.

Your website will do the same. You’ll learn what works, what feels good, and what your visitors love. And the best part? You can change it whenever you want.

Unlike printed materials, your website is flexible. You can update words, swap photos, and try new ideas today, next month, or whenever inspiration strikes.

And remember: Google’s algorithm favours websites that are regularly updated and optimised. It shows that you’re active, engaged, and keeping things fresh, all good signs for both search engines and your dream clients.

A gentle nudge from me

Your idea deserves to be out there. Your website doesn’t need to win design awards; it just needs to help you share your story and connect with the people who need you.

I promise, done is always better than perfect.
