The Scottish Tartans Gift Shop
The Problem
The original website for the Scottish Tartan Gift Shop was created many years ago using Shopify. The old developer wished to step away, and the client wanted to improve the site and add extra features such as a Tartan Database. The client was also looking for ongoing website updates, marketing, Mailchimp and educational support.
Who are The Scottish Tartan Gift Shop
The Scottish Tartans Museum and Heritage Center, Inc. is a one-of-a-kind tartan museum in the U.S. Their museum exhibits upstairs and downstairs show the evolution of the kilt and tartan. They are dedicated to the promotion and education of tartan, Highland Dress, and the history and culture of Scotland. Their gift shop, online sales, museum memberships, and donations are the oil that keeps the wheels moving. They offer a large selection of Scottish and Celtic Treasures. They can custom design your kilt and provide accessories, jewellery, clan crest items, books, children’s clothing, food, tartan scarves, tartan ties, tartan sashes and much more.
The Solution
After discussions with the client, we decided to move them to WordPress & WooCommerce. They were already using PayPal for payments, so we could quickly move the payment system over. The most prominent element of this project would be to create the Tartan Database and then connect products to it. After this, it was simple to move over the products from Shopify, set up the new categories, and re-organise everything.

The client wished to be involved and educated to help with simple tasks such as adding products. The client was 100% involved, and we built a strong working relationship.
Educational documentation was created along the way so that the client had complete control and could readily update it in the future.

As the client is a non-profit charity, we had to keep the budget low and decide extra carefully when we did go pro for plugins or other bits and bobs.

The Live Website
The Future
Now that the site is live, we have created a phase two for this project that will involve:

• Updating product photographs - either from suppliers or photoshoots,
• Improving the copy on the site to be more SEO-friendly,
• Mailchimp email marketing and more,
• Social Media Marketing,
• General website and business improvements.
